Strawberry-Rhubarb Shortcake

Strawberries and rhubarb

Time is flying by way too fast. Just the other day I realized that it’s been over two months since I’ve posted anything here. How did that happen and when did time start darting past so quickly? I feel like summer should be a little slower than the rest of the year. Perhaps I’m dreaming, but I think there should be time for lying in hammocks, savoring bi-rite ice cream, floating down rivers and pickling summer vegetables. Although I haven’t had much time for those things yet, I have had enough time to make this strawberry-rhubarb shortcake, which has almost completely made up for everything else.

The Farm

April 8th, 2010

our trailer

We’re home from France. My sister and I experienced a lot of cold, a lot of adventure and a little bit of disappointment but we made it back safely and I’m ready to get back to cooking and blogging as usual. Here are a few pictures from our trip, I’m hoping they speak for themselves…

Paris

March 9th, 2010

Pierre Herme macarons

We’re riding on a very fast train into the center of France right now. My younger sister and I have spent a week in Paris and are now watching out the window as the magnificent buildings and crowded sidewalks turn into endless trees and quaint little houses. We’re headed to a farm where we hope to learn about farming and explore the countryside, but first here are some pictures from Paris. We saw some  of the most amazing architecture and art but what stuck with me most was the food.

Giveaway – Green Grocer Bags

Green Grocer Bags

I have been talking, thinking, obsessing about holiday gifts this year. I want to find and make great presents without draining my piggy bank. Because this has recently become my mission, I’m having a little giveaway so that you can either check another gift off your list or give yourself an early present – you deserve it!

Green Grocer Bags have become my new favorite thing to bring to the grocery store. Here are a few reasons why I love them:

1. Five bags in one! You get a big tote bag and four smaller produce bags.
2. Each bag is a different, bright and cheery color.
3. They make me feel cool at Rainbow.
4. They are the product of a small, local business with a lot of heart.

Ginger Carrot Soup

Carrots

Ok – I didn’t post anything for Halloween. I thought we would be carving pumpkins and roasting seeds, I even thought I might get around to making this pumpkin seed brittle. But if you remember, I was sick last week and had to scramble to put together a last minute costume on Saturday, leaving no time for pumpkin fun. I still have a bunch of whole pumpkins on my front steps who are very sad to have missed out on Halloween. There’s always next year. I did still feel the need to make something just a little bit festive, so I made orange soup. It’s not spooky and doesn’t include any pumpkin (sorry pumpkins), but it is orange and that will just have to do.

Mediterranean Lentil and Couscous Salad

October 22nd, 2009

lentils and couscous

I end up eating very random things when I’m home for lunch. It’s never a planned meal, so I’ll end up picking around at everything. A few green olives at 12:23, a slice of bread with cheese at 12:48, a handful of grapes at 1:17, a piece of dark chocolate at 1:32 – it goes on like this for a while. I will just keep snacking away with out ever feeling like it’s maybe a good time to stop. I realized that this might be a problem when I found myself eating stale graham crackers at 2:46 – something I would never crave. I decided that I should make some healthy meals, ready for when I’m lost at lunch time. This is one of those meals and has been an awesome dish to have when 12:30 rolls around.

Roasted Tomato-Basil Soup

Heirloom Tomatoes

We had a storm here on Tuesday. It rained the entire day and was so windy, we didn’t let the cat go outside fearing she would be blown away. We are total weather wimps in San Francisco. For most of the year it’s pretty mild, we get a lot of fog but we don’t get many storms. So when we did have a storm this week, four out of the six people living in our house stayed home. It felt like we were kids and school was cancelled.
